Eartha M.M. White and her mother Clara White, Jacksonville, Florida, 1910.
A former opera singer, Eartha was instrumental in the construction of the first school for black children in the Baryard neighborhood of Jacksonville. By living frugally, Eartha was able to contribute to a range of philanthropic causes while working as a schoolteacher. In 1904, Eartha founded the Clara White Mission in honor of her mother, a former slave who ran a soup kitchen out her home. Initially founded to serve blacks in segregated Jacksonville, the Clara White Mission today provides social services to people of all races.

You ever feel like there’s too much talk about Tim Tebow ? I sure don’t :) Here is some interesting info from the aftermath of the Denver Broncos 29-23 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. • The fact that Tebow had 316 yards passing and averaged 31.6 yards per pass in the game didn’t escape notice on Sunday night. Tebow wore “John 3:16” on his eye black in the 2009 BCS Championship game and has since become identified with the famous Bible message. The coincidental stats caused millions of fans to perform Google searches on the Bible passage in the past 24 hours. Here’s one more unbelievable stat: John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that the final quarter-hour television rating for the Broncos-Steelers game was, you guessed it, 31.6.

On Sunday, it was announced that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il had died. Kim Jong-Il, by all accounts, was a pretty awful guy (and yes, I know that’s an understatement). He was also known as something of an eccentric, as well as rumored to be a big NBA fan. His successor, son Kim Jong-un (formerly “Youth Commander” Kim Jong-un) is a huge basketball fan as well, but his fandom goes beyond mere speculation. He even displays a picture of himself with a well-known Southern California hoops superstar.
